The cost of a design is usually found out too late
Most people design first and find out the cost later. Early figures usually come from the build approach and an average cost per square metre. That is a sensible place to start. It says nothing about your site, your specification or the risks that come with them, and the plans keep developing around the number.
By the time builders price the work, there is often little room to change course without extra cost, delay or compromises you did not choose.

- give you an honest first view: safe, at risk or wrong if you have a budget, or a realistic sense of range if you do not

If it makes sense to go further, he will explain the full review: a written best-case and worst-case budget for your project. You can say no.
